About > Overview
The Falls Road Running Store is Baltimore's oldest specialty running store. It is locally owned and operated by runners for runners. It may well be the hardest retail operation to find this side of the Great Divide...but the search is well worth it.
Our business approach goes much further than simply stocking a commodity product that can be found in big box stores or Internet ads. Our philosophy is simple - treat runners like we want to be treated when we visit a specialty store. That means leaving you alone when you want to browse, or guiding you in the right direction when you are seeking assistance, and not jamming extra product on you to increase the amount of the sale.
Our staff knows what works, and can help you discover what should work for you. If you have been "upsold" double your budget elsewhere, had high schoolers in malls look at you with a blank face when you tell them your heel hurts in the morning, wondered where the best runs in town are, well, you can find answers here.
Inside our doors, you will meet people who run for fitness and who run to win. You may meet milers and marathoners, trail runners and some triathletes who are great swimmers and bikers, but hate to run. You will meet walkers and football players trying to stay in shape. Our visitors range from back-of-the-pack walkers to Olympians. Professional athletes come to us, podiatrists send their patients to us, but by far and away, most people just walk in all by themselves.
Years ago the Hess Running Center was the place to go in Baltimore. Suddenly, the entire regional Hess Shoe chain closed and went out of business, including the Running Center. About that time, local runner Jim Adams was asking local triathlon coach Troy Jacobson why he didn't sell running shoes along with wetsuits and bicycles in his triathlon store. The two worked out a handshake deal for Jim to take a corner of the tri-store and Troy to receive a percentage of profits in lieu of rent. Both ventures grew to the point of separation just due to space. Troy chose to leave and set up shop in Hunt Valley, and eventually in Arizona, where he is a best-selling coach and producer of training videos. Jim grew the original space at Falls Road to triple the original size, with the acquisition of two additional basement areas. Inevitably, the store's growth attracted numerous competitors. Some have survived while others have failed, but Falls Road Running remains a Baltimore running tradition.
Falls Road Running does not have an event management company as a formal part of the operation. FRR generally refers that business to several management companies in the region. However, we do operate a few store managed events every year. You can find exact dates in the Events/Calendar section.
